Jurassic World is Back! Tiga tahun lalu, “Jurassic World Dominion“ menjadi salah satu sekuel lanjutan yang terasa naas, tetapi tidak membuat Universal Pictures berhenti untuk melanjutkan ceritanya. Berbekal dengan setting cerita yang berbeda, “Jurassic World Rebirth” dirancang untuk membawa kembali penonton dalam keseruan petualangan bersama dinosaurus dengan versi yang kesekian.
Kisah diawali dengan setting di Ile Saint-Hubert, dengan sebuah taman dinosaurus yang diisi oleh peneliti-peneliti. Mereka melakukan eksperimen genetik dengan melakukan mutasi gen untuk membuat spesies baru. Salah satunya adalah Distortus rex atau D-Rex, yang merupakan kombinasi 6 Tyrannosaurus. Berawal dari Snickers, terjadilah tragedi yang membuat kontrol pengamanan area menjadi nonaktif, yang berakhir dengan pembunuhan personel yang memicu tragedi ini. Peneliti pun meninggalkan wilayah itu. Melanjutkan kisah film sebelumnya, film ini bersetting ketika dinosaurus sudah hidup bersama manusia, dan hidup pada area-area yang dibatasi.
Cerita lalu terfokus pada Martin Krebs, yang diperankan oleh Rupert Friend, seorang eksekutif di sebuah perusahaan farmasi bernama ParkerGenix. Ia mencari seorang perempuan bernama Zora Bennett, mantan agen rahasia yang diperankan oleh Scarlett Johansson, untuk membantunya mengumpulkan sampel dari beberapa dinosaurus, guna pembuatan sebuah pengobatan penyakit kardiovaskular. Dalam ekspedisi ini, Zora dibantu oleh Dr. Henry Loomis, yang diperankan oleh Jonathan Bailey, yang menjadi tenaga ahli perjalanan ini.
Dalam memulai perjalanan ketiganya, mereka mampir menuju Paramaribo, Suriname. Di sana, Zora mengajak rekan lamanya yang bernama Duncan Kincaid, diperankan oleh Mahershala Ali, untuk membantunya. Tim pun menjadi semakin lengkap dengan adanya LeClerc si nakhoda, Nina sang pembunuh bayaran, dan Bobby Atwater si pakar keamanan.
Dalam perjalanan menuju Ile Saint-Hubert, kelompok ini menyelamatkan sebuah keluarga yang baru saja diserang Mosasaurus. Kapal mereka terbalik, dan untungnya semua selamat. Terdiri dari Reuben Delgado beserta kedua putrinya, Teresa dan Isabella. Tak ketinggalan juga ada Xavier, kekasih Teresa yang selalu membuat Reuben bersitegang. Keluarga yang baru saja trauma dan mendapat penyelamatan itu ternyata juga kaget ketika kapal yang mereka tumpangi justru malah akan membawa mereka ke dalam petualangan menantang maut.
“Jurassic World Rebirth” disutradarai oleh Gareth Edwards, yang sebelumnya telah dikenal dalam film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“ yang menurut saya monoton. Naskah filmnya ditulis oleh David Koepp, yang merupakan penulis naskah “Jurassic Park” dan juga dikenal sebagai penulis “Spider-Man,” “Mission: Impossible,” sampai “Angels and Demons.” Rasanya, kembalinya Koepp seperti ingin mengulang kejayaan film pertamanya, seiring semakin suramnya waralaba ini dari sebelumnya. Namun, apakah formula ini berhasil?
Pada “Jurassic World Rebirth,” penonton kembali dihadirkan dengan taman dinosaurus buatan, namun tidak banyak cerita di sini mengingat sudah ditinggalkan. Sehingga tidak ada informasi seiring dengan tim Zora yang memulai eksplorasi mereka di sana. Seperti film-film sebelumnya, yang selalu menewaskan cast-nya satu per satu, film ini pun tak lepas dari tebak-tebakan saya sepanjang menyaksikannya. Dari sekian banyak, cuma satu yang lepas dari tebakan saya, yaitu karakter Xavier yang dibuat selamat sampai di akhir film.
Masih membahas ceritanya, sepertinya “Jurassic World Rebirth” ini terlalu ramai. Kalau dihitung ada sebanyak 7 anggota tim ekspedisi, belum termasuk 4 anggota keluarga Reuben. Saya yang awalnya mengira mungkin hanya dua atau tiga yang selamat di akhir, ternyata jauh meleset. Koepp seakan ingin menyelamatkan karakter-karakter yang berhati baik di film ini. Mungkin ia tak mau penonton segala usianya kecewa.
Lalu bagaimana dengan petualangannya? Ya, sempat bikin dag dig dug. Apalagi ketika Teresa sedang melarikan diri dari T-Rex yang sedang tertidur. Bagian scene ini sebetulnya yang paling membuat saya deg-degan, tetapi pada akhirnya terasa too good to be true. Amat tidak sesuai ekspektasi. Apalagi ketika di akhir, si dinosaurus malah menyerah dan memberikan kapal pelampung buat mereka. Bikin emosi semakin krik krik dengan ceritanya.
Di sisi lain, ekspedisi Zora justru jadi bagian seru dalam “Jurassic World Rebirth.” Saya menikmati ketika saat proses pengambilan sampel kedua, yang menampilkan Titanosaurus. Saya rasa ini merupakan momen terbaik, terutama saat tim ekspedisi terpukau, apalagi saat Loomis terharu menyentuh kaki dinosaurus tersebut. Begitu pula saat pengambilan sampel ketiga, setting yang diramaikan oleh air terjun dengan tebing tinggi menjadi sangat menegangkan, ketika tiba-tiba Quetzalcoatlus menyerang tim ekspedisi.
Pada satu sisi, saya merasa kehadiran Scarlett Johansson cukup memberikan rasa baru di dalam ceritanya. Apalagi ditambah Mahershala Ali, yang sebelumnya saya saksikan dalam “Moonlight“ ataupun “Green Book,” ia hadir sebagai sosok Kincaid yang juga berwibawa dan disegani. Saya merasa karakter Kincaid dikemas untuk semakin mencuri perhatian penonton seiring berjalannya cerita.
Di sisi lain, saya merasa drama keluarga Reuben justru yang bikin ceritanya runyam dan kurang menarik. Apalagi dengan karakter Xavier yang menyebalkan buat saya, ataupun Teresa yang keliatan rese. Justru kehadiran sosok Dolores yang menemani Isabella, malah jadi penambah karakter gemas di film ini.
Aspek yang saya sukai di film ini adalah sisi aksinya. Pemburuan sampel dikemas dengan cukup menantang, dengan visualisasi setting hutan hujan yang misterius nan membunuh. Selain itu aspek musik juga tetap jadi unggulan. Score yang digawangi Alexander Desplat, terasa cukup bisa membangun emosi walaupun tidak semenyaingi versi pertama yang dibuat John Williams. Walaupun demikian, saya merasa score Desplat ini bisa menjadi salah satu contender untuk Best Original Score di awards season tahun ini.
Alhasil, “Jurassic World Rebirth” yang diusung Universal Pictures untuk awards season tahun ini, tidak membuat saya seterpukau dengan versi live action “How to Train Your Dragon,” yang sama-sama diusungnya. Padahal pesan yang ingin disampaikan film ini lumayan terasa, tentang pentingnya alam sebagai pengontrol kehidupan kita. Andai saja semua drama Reuben dihapus, dan lebih memperbanyak cerita petualangannya, saya rasa film ini akan lebih jauh memuaskan. Yang pasti, “Jurassic World Rebirth” masih jauh lebih baik dari “Jurassic World Dominion.”

Jurassic World is Back! Three years ago, “Jurassic World Dominion“ felt like a disastrous sequel continuation, but that didn’t stop Universal Pictures from continuing the story. Armed with a different story setting, “Jurassic World Rebirth” is designed to bring audiences back into the excitement of adventuring with dinosaurs in yet another iteration.
The story begins with a setting on Ile Saint-Hubert, with a dinosaur park filled with researchers. They conduct genetic experiments by mutating genes to create new species. One of them is Distortus rex or D-Rex, which is a combination of 6 Tyrannosauruses. Starting from Snickers, a tragedy occurred that caused the area’s security control to become inactive, ending with the murder of personnel that triggered this tragedy. The researchers then abandoned the area. Continuing the story of the previous film, this one is set when dinosaurs already live alongside humans, residing in restricted areas.
The story then focuses on Martin Krebs, played by Rupert Friend, an executive at a pharmaceutical company called ParkerGenix. He seeks a woman named Zora Bennett, a former secret agent played by Scarlett Johansson, to help him collect samples from several dinosaurs for the creation of a cardiovascular disease treatment. In this expedition, Zora is assisted by Dr. Henry Loomis, played by Jonathan Bailey, who serves as the expert for this journey.
In starting their third journey, they stop by Paramaribo, Suriname. There, Zora invites her old colleague named Duncan Kincaid, played by Mahershala Ali, to help her. The team becomes even more complete with the addition of LeClerc the captain, Nina the hitwoman, and Bobby Atwater the security expert.
On their way to Ile Saint-Hubert, this group rescues a family that had just been attacked by a Mosasaurus. Their boat capsized, and fortunately everyone survived. Consisting of Reuben Delgado and his two daughters, Teresa and Isabella. Not to mention Xavier, Teresa’s boyfriend who always clashes with Reuben. The family that had just been traumatized and rescued was also shocked when the ship they boarded would actually take them into a death-defying adventure.
“Jurassic World Rebirth” is directed by Gareth Edwards, who was previously known for the film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“ which I found monotonous. The screenplay was written by David Koepp, who is the screenwriter of “Jurassic Park” and also known as the writer of “Spider-Man,” “Mission: Impossible,” to “Angels and Demons.” It feels like Koepp’s return is an attempt to recapture the glory of his first film, as this franchise has grown increasingly bleak. But does this formula work?
In “Jurassic World Rebirth,” audiences are once again presented with an artificial dinosaur park, but there isn’t much story here given it’s been abandoned. So there’s no information as Zora’s team begins their exploration there. Like previous films, which always kill off their cast one by one, this film also didn’t escape my guessing game throughout watching it. Of all of them, only one escaped my prediction, namely Xavier’s character who was kept alive until the end of the film.
Still discussing the story, it seems “Jurassic World Rebirth” is too crowded. If you count, there are 7 expedition team members, not including the 4 members of Reuben’s family. I initially thought maybe only two or three would survive in the end, but I was way off. Koepp seems to want to save the good-hearted characters in this film. Perhaps he didn’t want audiences of all ages to be disappointed.
So what about the adventure? Well, it made my heart race a bit. Especially when Teresa was running away from a sleeping T-Rex. This scene was actually the most nerve-wracking for me, but in the end it felt too good to be true. It didn’t match expectations at all. Especially when at the end, the dinosaur just gives up and provides them with a lifeboat. It made my emotions increasingly flat with the story.
On the other hand, Zora’s expedition actually becomes the exciting part of “Jurassic World Rebirth.” I enjoyed the second sample collection process, which featured the Titanosaurus. I think this is the best moment, especially when the expedition team was in awe, particularly when Loomis was moved touching the dinosaur’s foot. Likewise during the third sample collection, the setting enlivened by a waterfall with high cliffs becomes very tense, when suddenly a Quetzalcoatlus attacks the expedition team.
On one side, I feel Scarlett Johansson’s presence brings a fresh feeling to the story. Especially with the addition of Mahershala Ali, whom I previously watched in “Moonlight“ or “Green Book,” he appears as Kincaid who is also authoritative and respected. I feel the character of Kincaid is packaged to increasingly steal the audience’s attention as the story progresses.
On the other hand, I feel Reuben’s family drama is what makes the story messy and less interesting. Especially with Xavier’s character who annoyed me, or Teresa who seemed bratty. Instead, the presence of Dolores accompanying Isabella actually adds to the adorable characters in this film.
The aspect I liked in this film is the action side. The sample hunting is packaged quite challengingly, with visualization of a mysterious and deadly rainforest setting. Besides that, the music aspect also remains a highlight. The score led by Alexander Desplat feels capable of building emotion although not rivaling the first version made by John Williams. Nevertheless, I feel Desplat’s score could be one of the contenders for Best Original Score in this year’s awards season.
In the end, “Jurassic World Rebirth” which Universal Pictures is pushing for this year’s awards season, didn’t impress me as much as the live action version of “How to Train Your Dragon,” which they’re also promoting. Although the message this film wants to convey is quite palpable, about the importance of nature as a controller of our lives. If only all of Reuben’s drama was removed, and more adventure story was added, I think this film would be far more satisfying. What’s certain is that “Jurassic World Rebirth” is still far better than “Jurassic World Dominion.”
