Sebagai pengagum musikal, rasanya saya tidak akan melewatkan film ini. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” kembali di-remake setelah lebih dari tiga dekade silam. Apalagi semenjak perilisannya di Sundance Film Festival, Jennifer Lopez digadang-gadang untuk masuk unggulan persaingan Best Actress in a Supporting Role di Awards Season mendatang. Apakah sebagus itu?
“Kiss of the Spider Woman” bukanlah sebuah film superhero. Main character-nya adalah Luis Molina, seorang gay yang diperankan Tonatiuh. Ia dituduh melakukan sexual harassment yang membawanya ke sebuah sel penjara. Di sanalah ia bertemu dengan Armando, salah seorang tokoh pergerakan yang diperankan oleh Diego Luna, yang menjadi musuh pemerintah.
Sebagai konteks, film ini bersetting di Argentina pada masa “Dirty War,” di mana pemerintahan dikuasai oleh junta militer. Armando adalah satu dari puluhan ribu aktivis yang menjadi bagian dari pergolakan. Pada masa tersebut, pemerintah tidak akan segan untuk memasukkan oknum-oknum yang diduga berkaitan dengan komunis, sosialis, peronis, dan gerakan Montoneros.
Balik ke cerita. Layaknya tokoh-tokoh yang dibuang ke penjara, Armando hanya sibuk membaca, ataupun menuangkan pikirannya dalam tulisan. Namun, kehadiran Molina malah memberi vibrant ke dalam ruangan tersebut. Ia menghiasi sel dengan segala pernak-pernik, termasuk poster film dari aktris favoritnya, Ingrid Luna.
Karakter yang awalnya kontras ini perlahan-lahan mulai mencair seiring dengan Molina yang terlalu banyak bercerita. Salah satu yang membuat ceritanya menarik adalah ketika ia menyaksikan “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” film yang membuat ia tidak bisa tidur seminggu. Molina pun menceritakan kisah tentang Aurora, yang diperankan Jennifer Lopez, dalam melawan kutukan sang perempuan laba-laba dan mendapatkan cintanya.
Film ini ditulis dan disutradarai oleh Bill Condon, peraih Oscar untuk naskah film “Gods and Monsters.” Sebelumnya, Condon sudah tidak asing dengan musikal. Ia adalah penulis di balik film Best Picture “Chicago,” sekaligus menyutradarai salah satu film favorit saya sepanjang masa, “Dreamgirls.” Apa yang dilakukan Condon sebetulnya adalah mengadaptasi versi musikal yang ditulis Terrence McNally, yang versinya telah dirilis di Broadway pada tahun 1993. Versi ini sebetulnya bukanlah remake “Kiss of the Spider Woman”-nya Hector Babenco, melainkan versi musikal.
Secara penyajian, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” akan memberikan dua jenis transisi cerita sampai akhir. Cerita pertama akan terfokus dengan percakapan Molina dan Armando, yang lebih dihiasi dengan pencairan keduanya sekaligus tersiksa di penjara. Sedangkan bagian kedua adalah bagian musikalnya, yang akan membawa penonton layaknya menyaksikan film musikal era 1950-an dari cerita Molina.
Yang saya sukai dari “Kiss of the Spider Woman” adalah penyajian musikalnya itu sendiri. Treatment yang digunakan dalam film ini mengingatkan saya pada klasik “An American in Paris” dan “Chicago,” di mana aksi musikalnya hanya dibatasi dalam bentuk panggung. Apalagi dalam versi musikal, Tonatiuh dan Diego Luna juga memerankan karakter lain, yang menjadi sahabat dan love interest karakter Aurora.
Membahas lagunya, rasanya yang paling terngiang buat saya adalah track “An Everyday Man” yang dinyanyikan Diego Luna. Selain itu ada “Where You Are” yang dinyanyikan Jennifer Lopez dan Tonatiuh dengan cukup megah. Lagu-lagu yang lain sayangnya tidak se-memorable seperti di “Dreamgirls.” Padahal, bila melihat album soundtrack film, mayoritas lagunya dinyanyikan Jennifer Lopez.
Dari sisi akting, sepertinya ini merupakan comeback mengesankan dari Jennifer Lopez setelah “Hustlers,” beberapa tahun lalu. Lopez rasanya bisa jadi salah satu contender kuat untuk persaingan Oscar tahun ini. Namun, rasanya juga saya belum yakin mengingat ada banyak penampilan lain yang perlu diperhitungkan. Cuma saja, di dalam film ini, karakter yang ditampilkan Lopez memang akan selalu jadi center of attention, yang memikat saya dengan kemampuan akting, menyanyi, dan menari.
Aspek teknis yang tidak boleh dilewatkan adalah costume design yang digawangi Colleen Atwood dan Christine L. Cantella. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” hadir dengan kostum-kostum yang memukau. Pakaian-pakaian karakter Aurora yang merupakan pemimpin redaksi suatu majalah fashion hadir dengan warna-warna terang mencolok nan glamour. Di sisi lain, karakter Spider Woman juga dikemas dengan kesan horor, salah satunya lewat rok yang jika ditarik memperlihatkan sarang laba-laba.
Bila membahas persaingan awards season tahun ini, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” sepertinya cukup unggul untuk beberapa kategori teknis. Mulai dari Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Adapted Screenplay, dan mungkin Best Actor in a Leading Role untuk Tonatiuh. Saya merasa karakter Molina yang dihidupkan Tonatiuh cenderung lebih natural, mungkin karena Tonatiuh juga seorang queer, yang sangat jauh in a positive way dengan penampilan William Hurt yang kemudian memenangkan Oscar di tahun 1986. Pada versi Hurt, sosok Molina yang dihadirkan feel-nya seperti aktor-aktor yang sedang memerankan perempuan, misalnya saat Robin Williams dalam “Mrs. Doubtfire” ataupun Dustin Hoffman dalam “Tootsie.”
Walaupun berakhir tidak sefenomenal yang saya duga, saya masih mengapresiasi musikalitas “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” Versi yang lebih menitikberatkan musikalnya ini akan mengenyampingkan unsur cerita drama politik dari aslinya, dan malah akan membuat penonton ikut terbius dengan kisah Molina dengan Aurora. Not as explosive as hoped, but undeniably enchanting.

As a musical admirer, I feel I won’t miss this film. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is being remade after more than three decades. Especially since its release at Sundance Film Festival, Jennifer Lopez has been touted to enter the top contention for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in the upcoming Awards Season. Is it that good?
“Kiss of the Spider Woman” is not a superhero film. The main character is Luis Molina, a gay man played by Tonatiuh. He is accused of sexual harassment that brings him to a prison cell. There he meets Armando, a movement figure played by Diego Luna, who is an enemy of the government.
As context, this film is set in Argentina during the “Dirty War,” where the government was controlled by a military junta. Armando is one of tens of thousands of activists who are part of the upheaval. During that time, the government would not hesitate to imprison individuals suspected of being associated with communists, socialists, Peronists, and the Montoneros movement.
Back to the story. Like figures thrown into prison, Armando only busies himself reading, or pouring his thoughts into writing. However, Molina’s presence instead brings vibrance into that room. He decorates the cell with all sorts of trinkets, including film posters of his favorite actress, Ingrid Luna.
This initially contrasting character slowly begins to thaw as Molina talks too much. One thing that makes the story interesting is when he watches “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” a film that kept him from sleeping for a week. Molina then tells the story of Aurora, played by Jennifer Lopez, in fighting the curse of the spider woman and getting her love.
This film is written and directed by Bill Condon, Oscar winner for the screenplay “Gods and Monsters.” Previously, Condon was no stranger to musicals. He is the writer behind the Best Picture film “Chicago,” while directing one of my all-time favorite films, “Dreamgirls.” What Condon actually did was adapt the musical version written by Terrence McNally, whose version was released on Broadway in 1993. This version is actually not a remake of Hector Babenco’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” but rather a musical version.
In terms of presentation, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” will provide two types of story transitions to the end. The first story will focus on Molina and Armando’s conversation, more adorned with their thawing and suffering in prison. While the second part is the musical part, which will bring the audience as if watching a 1950s era musical film from Molina’s story.
What I like about “Kiss of the Spider Woman” is the presentation of the musical itself. The treatment used in this film reminds me of classics “An American in Paris” and “Chicago,” where the musical action is only limited to stage form. Moreover, in the musical version, Tonatiuh and Diego Luna also play other characters, who become friends and love interests of Aurora’s character.
Discussing the songs, what resonates most with me is the track “An Everyday Man” sung by Diego Luna. Besides that, there’s “Where You Are” sung by Jennifer Lopez and Tonatiuh quite magnificently. Other songs unfortunately are not as memorable as in “Dreamgirls.” Yet, when looking at the film’s soundtrack album, most of the songs are sung by Jennifer Lopez.
Acting-wise, this seems to be an impressive comeback from Jennifer Lopez after “Hustlers,” a few years ago. Lopez could be one of the strong contenders for this year’s Oscar competition. However, I’m also not sure yet considering there are many other performances that need to be considered. It’s just that, in this film, the character displayed by Lopez will always be the center of attention, captivating me with her acting, singing, and dancing abilities.
A technical aspect that shouldn’t be missed is the costume design handled by Colleen Atwood and Christine L. Cantella. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” comes with stunning costumes. Aurora’s character outfits as editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine come in bright, striking, and glamorous colors. On the other hand, the Spider Woman character is also packaged with a horror impression, one of which is through a skirt that when pulled reveals a spider web.
When discussing this year’s awards season competition, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” seems quite superior for several technical categories. From Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Adapted Screenplay, and perhaps Best Actor in a Leading Role for Tonatiuh. I feel Molina’s character brought to life by Tonatiuh tends to be more natural, perhaps because Tonatiuh is also queer, which is very far in a positive way from William Hurt’s performance who then won the Oscar in 1986. In Hurt’s version, Molina’s figure presented feels like actors playing women, for example when Robin Williams in “Mrs. Doubtfire” or Dustin Hoffman in “Tootsie.”
Although ending not as phenomenally as I suspected, I still appreciate the musicality of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” This version that emphasizes more on the musical will set aside the political drama story elements from the original, and instead will make the audience mesmerized by Molina’s story with Aurora. Not as explosive as hoped, but undeniably enchanting.
