Di Indonesia, kata ‘diva’ kerap diasosiasikan dengan para penyanyi perempuan yang punya kesuksesan. Hal ini akan bermakna lain dalam dunia Barat. Bermakna sama, namun mereka juga kadang problematik. Inilah cerita “Maria,” suguhan biografi hari-hari terakhir Maria Callas, one of the best soprano who ever lived.

Sedari awal, penonton sudah dikejutkan dengan sekelompok orang di suatu apartemen mewah, yang memberi kesan sedang melihat seorang perempuan tak bernyawa sedang tersungkur di ruang tamunya. Cerita kemudian akan membawa pada dua minggu terakhir dari wanita tersebut. Ia adalah Maria Callas, diperankan oleh Angelina Jolie, yang merupakan seorang penyanyi opera yang juga dijuluki La Divina.

Apa yang ingin diperlihatkan “Maria” rasanya ingin menggambarkan sosok Callas sebagai seorang manusia yang punya seabrek masalah, di balik kemegahan namanya di dunia opera. Cerita kemudian akan terfokus pada Callas yang juga merasa terperangkap dari kedua asisten pribadinya, sekaligus serangkaian halusinasi yang membuatnya tak bisa membedakan yang nyata dan yang tidak.

Film ini merupakan film ketiga dari trilogi wanita berpengaruh Pablo Larraín, yang sebelumnya juga menghadirkan “Jackie” dan “Spencer.” Keduanya sendiri sempat berhasil mencuri perhatian di musim penghargaan tahun tersebut. Yang cukup mengecewakan adalah ketika Kristen Stewart gagal meraih Oscar atas penampilannya sebagai Lady Diana, yang kemudian dimenangkan longtime nominee Jessica Chastain lewat “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”

Secara penyajian, saya menyukai bagaimana upaya Larraín dalam membangun setiap adegan film ini. Nuansa ambisius amat terasa memenuhi, apalagi ketika itu menyatu dengan rasa klasik yang kental, yang memang menjadi asosiasi utama karakter kita. Namun, dari cerita yang ditulis Steven Knight, “Maria” terbilang menjadi cerita tragis yang kurang mampu menuai simpati.

Masalah ketergantungan obat yang membangun dunia halusinasi Callas, malah membuatnya hidup dalam arogansi dan penuh gengsi, yang memang tak mampu membuatnya menjadi suatu inspirasi. Tema serupa juga saya temukan dalam “The Apprentice,” yang pada akhirnya ingin menyimpulkan penyajian karakter utama sebagai a human being. Ini saja belum termasuk dengan kisah cinta perselingkuhan fenomenal antara Callas dan konglomerat Onassis yang blak-blakan pada masanya.

Untung saja, upaya akting yang dihadirkan Angelina Jolie patut diapresiasi. Memerankan sosok legendaris dengan usaha untuk serupa, terutama saat ia harus memainkan mimik ketika melakukan lip sync di sepanjang film, menjadi tantangan tersendiri. Cuma saja, saya justru lebih menyukai upaya penggambaran Judy Garland oleh Renée Zellweger dalam “Judy,” yang juga seorang diva, namun ia menggunakan suaranya untuk menampilkan versinya. Memang sih rasanya sulit jika Jolie harus bernyanyi sesempurna Callas. Akan tetapi, transisi Callas yang diselipkan seakan punya gap yang lebih lebar, ketimbang upaya Marion Cotillard dalam memerankan kembali Édith Piaf dalam “La Vie en Rose.”

Film ini sendiri sudah dirilis di Venice Film Festival, dan menjadi bagian dalam kompetisi Golden Lion. Pada malam perilisannya, penonton memberikan standing applause yang cukup panjang atas penampilan akting Angelina Jolie. Sedangkan di musim penghargaan tahun ini, rasanya “Maria” tidak terlalu mencuri perhatian saya. Saya mungkin akan menjagokan Angelina Jolie untuk Best Actress in Leading Role, dan mungkin Best Production Design ataupun Best Costume Design untuk film ini.

Film yang didistribusikan oleh Netflix ini rasanya kurang terlalu memuaskan saya yang lapar dengan tontonan drama. “Maria” dihadirkan dengan kemasan boring, dengan karakterisasi tokoh utama yang tidak memikat, namun akting amat meyakinkan. Film ini pun kurang membangun ketertarikan saya untuk mencari tahu apakah adegan yang sedang diperlihatkan adalah realita atau halusinasi. Sekali lagi, sepertinya “Maria” kurang berhasil menyajikan pengalaman nonton yang berkesan, terlepas dari penyajiannya yang begitu ambisius.

In Indonesia, the word ‘diva’ is often associated with female singers who have achieved success. This takes on a different meaning in the Western world. While similar in meaning, they can also be problematic at times. This is the story of “Maria,” a biographical offering about the final days of Maria Callas, one of the best sopranos who ever lived.

From the beginning, audiences are shocked by a group of people in a luxurious apartment, giving the impression of witnessing a lifeless woman collapsed in her living room. The story then takes us to the final two weeks of this woman’s life. She is Maria Callas, portrayed by Angelina Jolie, an opera singer also known as La Divina.

What “Maria” wants to show seems to aim at depicting Callas as a human being with countless problems, behind the grandeur of her name in the opera world. The story then focuses on Callas, who also feels trapped by her two personal assistants, along with a series of hallucinations that make her unable to distinguish between reality and fiction.

This film is the third in Pablo Larraín’s trilogy of influential women, following “Jackie” and “Spencer.” Both previously managed to capture attention during their respective awards seasons. What was quite disappointing was when Kristen Stewart failed to win an Oscar for her performance as Lady Diana, which was then won by longtime nominee Jessica Chastain for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”

In terms of presentation, I appreciate Larraín’s efforts in building each scene of this film. The ambitious atmosphere is strongly felt, especially when it merges with the thick classical feel that is indeed the main association with our character. However, from the story written by Steven Knight, “Maria” becomes a tragic story that fails to garner sympathy.

The drug dependency problem that builds Callas’s hallucinatory world instead makes her live in arrogance and full of pride, which indeed fails to make her an inspiration. I found a similar theme in “The Apprentice,” which ultimately wants to conclude the presentation of the main character as a human being. This doesn’t even include the phenomenal love affair between Callas and tycoon Onassis that was openly discussed in its time.

Fortunately, the acting effort presented by Angelina Jolie deserves appreciation. Playing a legendary figure with the effort to resemble her, especially when she has to perform facial expressions while lip-syncing throughout the film, becomes its own challenge. However, I actually prefer Renée Zellweger’s portrayal of Judy Garland in “Judy,” who was also a diva, but she used her own voice to present her version. It would indeed be difficult if Jolie had to sing as perfectly as Callas. However, the transitions of Callas that are inserted seem to have a wider gap compared to Marion Cotillard’s effort in re-portraying Édith Piaf in “La Vie en Rose.”

The film itself was already released at the Venice Film Festival and became part of the Golden Lion competition. On its premiere night, audiences gave a fairly long standing applause for Angelina Jolie’s acting performance. As for this year’s awards season, “Maria” doesn’t really capture my attention. I might champion Angelina Jolie for Best Actress in Leading Role, and perhaps Best Production Design or Best Costume Design for this film.

This film distributed by Netflix doesn’t quite satisfy me, someone hungry for drama viewing. “Maria” is presented with a boring package, with main character characterization that isn’t captivating, but very convincing acting. This film also fails to build my interest in finding out whether the scenes being shown are reality or hallucination. Once again, “Maria” seems to fail in presenting a memorable viewing experience, despite its very ambitious presentation.
