Termasuk ke dalam daftar film yang saya tunggu di tahun ini, film ini sudah lebih dulu mencuri perhatian saya dari trailernya yang menegangkan. “Conclave” merupakan salah satu tontonan dari 2024 yang akan membawa penonton pada cerita di belakang layar dari pemilihan paus.
Sosok utama kita adalah Kardinal Lawrence, diperankan oleh Ralph Fiennes, yang merupakan pemimpin atau dekan dari para kardinal. Suatu malam, ia dipanggil karena meninggalnya Bapa Suci Vatikan. Sesampainya di sana, ia mulai mencuri perhatian penonton. Melalui dialognya, ia berupaya menggali informasi mengenai kejadian kematian ini. Maklum, sehari sebelumnya, ia telah berbicara kepada mendiang Paus mengenai keinginannya untuk mundur dari posisi dekan ini. Sayang sekali, Paus menolaknya.
Misteri kematian Paus pun menjadi salah satu tanda tanya besar, walaupun hasil dugaan sementara disebabkan serangan jantung. Lawrence pun ditemani oleh Kardinal Bellini, diperankan oleh Stanley Tucci, yang juga merupakan salah satu kardinal terdekat dengan Paus. Berhubung Paus telah tiada, sesuai dengan aturan Gereja, Kardinal Lawrence harus menjalankan salah satu tugas dari posisi yang diembannya: melaksanakan conclave.
Dalam ingatan saya, saya masih mengingat jelas suatu buku ilustrasi yang berupaya menggambarkan peristiwa conclave. Kegiatan ini terbilang sebagai suatu hal yang sakral dan tertutup, dengan ciri khas meniupkan asap setiap pembacaan hasil pengambilan suara. Bila sosok kardinal telah memenuhi jumlah suara sesuai dengan ketentuan, maka pembakaran kertas suara dan asap putih akan keluar dari Sistine Chapel. Jika masih belum memenuhi ketentuan, maka pengambilan suara akan dilakukan kembali, sekaligus pengeluaran asap berwarna hitam.
Film ini disutradarai oleh Edward Berger, yang sebelumnya sudah dikenal sebagai sutradara “All Quiet on the Western Front” yang kembali menghadiahkan Jerman Best International Feature di ajang Academy Awards. Naskah film ini ditulis oleh Peter Straughan yang sempat menulis “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” Ceritanya sendiri merupakan hasil adaptasi dari novel best-selling berjudul sama yang ditulis oleh Robert Harris.
Sepanjang dua jam, “Conclave” terasa sebagai suatu tontonan yang terus membangun pertanyaan. Betapa tidak, Berger membangun kesan menegangkan sepanjang film. Mulai dari misteri kematian paus, hingga politik para kardinal yang menguji keimanan mereka, yang luar biasanya disuguhkan lewat pengambilan gambar yang amat memukau. Suguhan sinematografi dari Stephane Fontaine amat berhasil membangun ketegangan dari konflik-konflik yang kerap hadir dingin. Salah satu bagian yang saya sukai adalah ketika pengambilan shot dari belakang, ketika Kardinal Lawrence menatap kesibukan kardinal di hari pertama conclave. Ataupun, begitu dramatisnya saat Kardinal Lawrence menyerahkan hasil voting-nya yang diakhiri dengan penyerangan ruangan conclave.
Bila membahas kisahnya, saya menyukai penggambaran para manusia di dalam gereja, yang kembali menyadarkan kita jika mereka masih ‘manusia,’ yang juga masih punya prasangka, masih bisa berbuat salah, ataupun belum bisa selesai dengan dosa lama mereka. Potret ketidaksempurnaan ini malah terasa menjadi cambuk buat saya, yang seraya menyiratkan jika yang sudah berupaya hidup suci saja masih mengalami hal yang membuat mereka struggle, apa kabar yang belum?
Sudut penceritaan yang terpusat pada Kardinal Lawrence juga terbilang menarik. Di satu sisi, Lawrence harus bisa menjadi kepala dalam memastikan sosok yang dipilih memang relevan. Di sisi lain, ia pun harus bergulat dengan kenaifan serta ego yang kerap menamparnya. Yang saya sukai adalah bagaimana Vatikan bekerja dengan segala macam rahasia, yang sengaja ditutupi, dan membuat mereka tidak memaksakan untuk mengetahui rahasia tersebut. Semacam memiliki keyakinan bahwa selalu ada maksud, yang nantinya akan terungkap dengan sendirinya.
Luar biasanya, “Conclave” juga diisi dengan ensemble cast yang tidak main-main. Ralph Fiennes, yang dikenal melalui “The English Patient” ataupun “The Grand Budapest Hotel” hadir dengan penampilan akting yang amat memukau. Saya rasa, ini adalah peran terbaiknya. Begitu pula dengan kehadiran Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, sampai Isabella Rossellini, yang sudah memberi sinyal jika drama ini harus mendapat sorotan, mengingat kesemuanya ini adalah aktor senior, yang terbilang memberikan jaminan tersendiri. Menurut saya, “Conclave” pantas disebut sebagai salah satu film dengan ensemble cast terbaik dari tahun 2024.
Selain itu, rasanya perlu membahas set produksi film ini yang patut diacungi jempol. Pengambilan adegan film sebagian besar dilakukan di Cinecittà Studios di Italia, yang berarti memberi kode jikalau lokasi-lokasi penting yang digunakan adalah buatan. Jika iya, maka Suzie Davis patut diberi acungan jempol atas upayanya ini. Production designer yang sebelumnya terlibat lewat “Saltburn” dan “Mr. Turner” harus dapat menyajikan adegan secara nyata, mengingat tantangan yang begitu besar untuk membuatnya sama persis.
Rasanya tak adil juga bila tidak membahas score film ini yang digarap Volker Bertelmann. Komposer peraih Academy Awards untuk “All Quiet on the Western Front” ini juga berhasil membangun emosi penonton akan dramatisasi kisahnya layaknya teror. Ketegangan-ketegangan ini menjadi semakin hidup dengan alunan musik dawai yang menakutkan, layaknya kita menyaksikan “Psycho.”
Pada musim penghargaan tahun ini, “Conclave” tentu harus disematkan sebagai salah satu film terbaik 2024. Film ini baru saja memenangkan Best Screenplay di Golden Globe Awards. Untuk Academy Awards tahun ini, saya rasa film ini akan banyak mengisi nominasi, termasuk Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor in Leading Role untuk Fiennes, Best Actor in Supporting Role untuk Lithgow dan Tucci, Best Actress in Supporting Role untuk Rossellini, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, dan mungkin Best Editing.

Among the films I’ve been anticipating this year, this one had already captured my attention from its gripping trailer. “Conclave” is one of 2024’s offerings that takes audiences behind the scenes of papal election.
Our main character is Cardinal Lawrence, played by Ralph Fiennes, who serves as the leader or dean of the cardinals. One night, he is summoned due to the death of the Holy Father of Vatican. Upon arriving there, he begins to capture the audience’s attention. Through his dialogue, he attempts to gather information about this death. Understandably, the day before, he had spoken to the late Pope about his desire to resign from this dean position. Unfortunately, the Pope refused.
The mystery of the Pope’s death becomes one of the major question marks, although preliminary assumptions suggest it was due to a heart attack. Lawrence is accompanied by Cardinal Bellini, played by Stanley Tucci, who is also one of the cardinals closest to the Pope. Since the Pope has passed away, according to Church rules, Cardinal Lawrence must carry out one of the duties of his position: conducting the conclave.
In my memory, I still clearly remember an illustrated book that attempted to depict the conclave event. This activity is considered sacred and closed, characterized by the blowing of smoke after each vote count reading. If a cardinal has met the required number of votes according to regulations, then the burning of ballot papers and white smoke will emerge from the Sistine Chapel. If the requirements are still not met, then voting will be conducted again, along with the release of black smoke.
This film is directed by Edward Berger, previously known as the director of “All Quiet on the Western Front” which again brought Germany the Best International Feature at the Academy Awards. The film’s screenplay is written by Peter Straughan who previously wrote “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” The story itself is an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same title written by Robert Harris.
Throughout two hours, “Conclave” feels like a viewing experience that continuously builds questions. Indeed, Berger builds a tense atmosphere throughout the film. From the mystery of the pope’s death to the politics of cardinals that test their faith, all extraordinarily presented through stunning cinematography. The cinematographic offering from Stephane Fontaine successfully builds tension from conflicts that often appear cold. One part I particularly enjoyed is the shot taken from behind, when Cardinal Lawrence observes the cardinals’ activities on the first day of the conclave. Or, how dramatic it is when Cardinal Lawrence submits his voting result, ending with an attack on the conclave room.
When discussing the story, I appreciate the portrayal of humans within the church, which reminds us that they are still ‘human,’ who also still have prejudices, can still make mistakes, or haven’t resolved their old sins. This portrait of imperfection actually feels like a wake-up call for me, implying that if those who strive to live holy lives still experience things that make them struggle, what about those who haven’t?
The narrative perspective centered on Cardinal Lawrence is also quite interesting. On one hand, Lawrence must be able to lead in ensuring that the chosen figure is indeed relevant. On the other hand, he must also wrestle with naivety and ego that often slaps him. What I like is how the Vatican works with all kinds of secrets, deliberately concealed, making them not force themselves to know those secrets. It’s like having faith that there’s always a purpose, which will eventually reveal itself.
Remarkably, “Conclave” is also filled with a serious ensemble cast. Ralph Fiennes, known through “The English Patient” or “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” presents a truly stunning acting performance. I think this is his best role. Likewise with the presence of Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, to Isabella Rossellini, who have already signaled that this drama deserves attention, considering all of them are senior actors who provide their own guarantee. In my opinion, “Conclave” deserves to be called one of the films with the best ensemble cast of 2024.
Additionally, it’s worth discussing this film’s production set which deserves applause. Most of the film’s scenes were shot at Cinecittà Studios in Italy, which means the important locations used are artificial. If so, then Suzie Davis deserves applause for her efforts. The production designer who was previously involved in “Saltburn” and “Mr. Turner” must be able to present scenes realistically, considering the enormous challenge of making them exactly the same.
It would also be unfair not to discuss this film’s score crafted by Volker Bertelmann. This Academy Awards-winning composer for “All Quiet on the Western Front” also successfully builds audience emotions for the story’s dramatization like terror. These tensions become even more alive with frightening string music, as if we’re watching “Psycho.”
In this year’s awards season, “Conclave” certainly should be included as one of the best films of 2024. This film just won Best Screenplay at the Golden Globe Awards. For this year’s Academy Awards, I think this film will fill many nominations, including Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor in Leading Role for Fiennes, Best Actor in Supporting Role for Lithgow and Tucci, Best Actress in Supporting Role for Rossellini, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and possibly Best Editing.
In conclusion, rather than questioning whether the conclave that occurs is indeed conducted as depicted in this film, at least “Conclave” is a serious offering that successfully meets my expectations, satisfying all my curiosity.
