“Preparation for the Next Life” mungkin jadi salah satu film yang paling kurang menarik saya dari daftar for your consideration Amazon MGM Studios tahun ini.

Pertemuan awal keduanya terasa janggal.

Masalahnya, “Preparation for the Next Life” kalau saya artikan secara eksplisit ya tentang kisah satu malam.

Saya belum membaca novelnya. “Preparation for the Next Life” hadir dengan begitu lambat, namun membuat saya gemas dengan keputusan-keputusan bodoh Aishe yang berbasis kata “cinta.”

“Preparation for the Next Life” hadir lebih buruk dari overrated-nya Minari.”

Penyajian “Preparation for the Next Life” yang dihadirkan hampir dua jam ini memang akan sungguh membosankan. It really turns me off.

🇬🇧 English Version – Translated

“Preparation for the Next Life” might be one of the films that least interests me from Amazon MGM Studios’ for your consideration list this year. This film has a setting about immigrant life in the United States, whose story is represented by multi-minority characters.

The main figure of this film is Aishe, played by Sebiye Behtiyar, who is a woman from Uighur, a Turkish ethnic minority that is part of China. She, along with other illegal immigrants, rides in a freezer truck, seeking a future. Like other illegal immigrants, without identity, she works with wages below standard in New York.

Aishe is someone who strives to be strong. She trains herself to stay strong and be able to work. All because of her rather bleak past. Her father, who worked as a soldier, was found dead. Meanwhile, her mother only wants to live surrendered. This is what makes Aishe try to fight the limitations she has.

In the midst of that hard work, one morning, she makes eye contact with Skinner, played by Fred Hechinger, a young man who is migrating to New York. Their initial meeting feels awkward. Skinner keeps following Aishe, which ends with them going to a hotel and you know the rest.

This film is directed by Bing Liu, a director who previously received Academy Awards nominations for “Minding the Gap.” The film’s script was written by Martyna Majok, who adapted it from the bestselling novel of the same title by Atticus Lish. It feels like with the immigrant theme, this film gets certain attention. Especially with big names in the producer’s chair, like Barry Jenkins and Brad Pitt.

The problem is, “Preparation for the Next Life” if I interpret it explicitly is about a one-night story. About a woman who keeps questioning her life, who meets a red flag guy, who seemingly only needs sex from her. Behind her increasingly deep questions, Aishe becomes increasingly naive with their increasingly destructive relationship.

I haven’t read the novel. However, from what I watched, this film feels so overrated. “Preparation for the Next Life” comes so slowly, but makes me frustrated with Aishe’s stupid decisions based on the word “love.” What’s most epic is when she starts her dialogue and says she is a Muslim. Not because of her religion, but what triggers this epicness is when Skinner says he likes differences, and ends with them looking for the nearest hotel to make out. Yet, in my opinion, by mentioning that identity, Aishe should be building Eastern boundaries that she adheres to.

Somehow, the immigrant story shown in this film feels harsh, but doesn’t seem to resonate at all. Very different when comparing similar films like Past Lives which feels deeper, The Brutalist with such magnificent ambition, or Brooklyn which offers beautiful drama. “Preparation for the Next Life” comes worse than the overrated Minari.”

In terms of presentation, this film is presented in two languages. Aishe and Skinner will dialogue in English, but viewers will also hear Aishe’s monologue that fills this film in Uighur. Yet, through this multi-minority background, this story should be more powerful.

As one of Amazon MGM Studios’ favorites this year, it feels like “Preparation for the Next Life” is the least interesting to me. I haven’t found any superior category from this film. This is far different from “Belen” which might steal attention like Emilia Pérez.”

The search for the meaning of Aishe’s life will indeed be like strong material from this film. She narrates as if writing a letter to her father, while expressing what she thinks. Unfortunately, the character played by Sebiye Behtiyar doesn’t evoke my sympathy at all. Especially during her conversation scene with the cleric that ends unpleasantly. Not perfect and not inspiring. Aishe’s figure is a picture of reality around us. The presentation of “Preparation for the Next Life” presented for almost two hours will indeed be very boring. It really turns me off.
