🇮🇩 Bahasa Indonesia – Original

Sungguh suatu kejutan.

Love it!

🇬🇧 English Version – Translated

After sitting on my watchlist for quite some time, “Sweet Dreams” I finally managed to watch as part of the Road to Jakarta Film Festival 2025. This activity, which is a collaboration with Cinemaworld, took place in the middle of Jakarta city that was busy being enlivened by demonstrators. Of course, I will not discuss student demands in this writing. Here is my review.

This film tells the story of Dutch people’s lives during the colonial era. One of them is about Jan, played by Hans Dagelet, who lives with his wife, Agathe, played by Renée Soutendijk, living in an Indonesian hinterland. Jan lives by running a sugar cane plantation business, while fond of hunting in the forest. Unfortunately, there’s no specific location in this story.

Like colonial land, there are no proper rules. Jan also has a dark relationship. He often sleeps with his maid, Siti, played by Hayati Azis. As a result, he also has a child named Karel, played by Rio Kaj Den Haas. One time, Jan was found poisoned to death. Agathe then wrote a letter to call her only son living in the Netherlands. Due to threats, Cornelis, played by Florian Myjer, came with his wife named Josefien, played by Lisa Zweerman, who was heavily pregnant.

Upon arriving in Indonesia, Cornelis and Josefien, who already had their own plans, found all the oddities that occurred. They didn’t find Jan’s corpse. Jan’s sugar cane business was also no longer running and had many debts. Not to mention the surprise that Jan’s wealth was inherited to his half-brother, Karel. Truly a surprise.

This film was written and directed by Ena Sendijarević, who was previously known from the work “Take Me Somewhere Nice” which won the Heart of Sarajevo award. “Sweet Dreams” itself was released through the competition route at the Locarno Film Festival and won a Pardo award for Soutendijk’s performance. Entering various festivals, continuing to Toronto, becoming the opening film at the Netherlands Film Festival, Chicago, Thessaloniki, Taipei, to Göteborg. The peak was when this film won six awards at the Netherlands Film Festival, including Golden Calf for Best Feature Film and Best Director. Until finally being selected as the Netherlands representative for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards, and didn’t make the shortlist.

In terms of storytelling, Sendijarević brings the audience like a novel story. The storytelling is divided into several chapters given interludes of black cards containing chapter sequences and titles. This approach slightly reminds me of methods often used, as we see in Poor Things or The Handmaiden.”

In terms of story, what is presented is indeed not as sweet as its title which is a sweet dream, but the audience will indeed be taken into something like a dream. The surprises present in the story led me to the distinctive feel of European festival films. Likewise with the presentation of colorful sets enlivening the rural Nusantara backdrop. These bold colors remind me of Wes Anderson’s selection style, except the color palette chosen doesn’t feel like the pastel often chosen by Anderson. Bold colors like jade green, or dark blood red become markers of firmness as well as uniqueness for this film.

Likewise with scenes in this film. The use of Dutch as the main language, then the presence of Indonesian language quite deceived me that this is not an Indonesian film. How could it not, Dutch cast players feel quite fluent in language, and quite amazing for me. Beyond that, I love the effort to present the colonial era, which shows the gap between society and the Dutch at that time, as well as the gap between people working for the Dutch and ordinary people.

From the performance side, I really like Renée Soutendijk, who I initially thought was the invisible hand in this story. I was quite surprised by what her character then did at the end of the film, especially when the scene presentation was packaged quite slowly for that part. A sadistic feeling that doesn’t look sadistic, but deadly.

What should also be appreciated is Hayati Azis’s bold performance as Siti. Siti appears as a figure who looks willing to be ordered around, when actually she’s tough. Apart from the cat-and-mouse romance story with Reza’s character, Siti actually looks more prominent when she accompanies Karel. Likewise during her smoking scene with Josefien, which actually feels inappropriate between master and servant at that time.

Running 102 minutes, “Sweet Dreams” becomes a dream viewing that will satisfy. I love the festival film-style execution, which somehow slightly reminds me of the Malaysian horror film, Tiger Stripes.” Although there’s no sense of historicity, I consider it a charming, sharp, and satisfying fantasy work. Love it!
