Untuk kesekian kalinya, karakter Smurfs kembali ke layar lebar. Berjudul “Smurfs,” sekarang giliran Paramount Animation yang memproduksi filmnya. Jika masih ingat, hampir satu dekade sebelumnya Sony Pictures Animation sudah menggarap sampai tiga judul: “The Smurfs,” “The Smurfs 2,” dan “Smurfs: The Lost Village.” Lalu pertanyaannya, apakah versi reboot yang kali ini akan sesukses yang sebelumnya?
Memulai ceritanya, “Smurfs” sudah akan membuat kita bersemangat sekaligus mengenali Smurf Village, yang merupakan hometown karakter fiksi kecil berwarna biru yang tinggal di dalam rumah berbentuk jamur. Lewat menghadirkan lagu ‘Smurfs Main Theme‘ alias ‘La La Song‘ yang terasa ceria sekaligus membangun nostalgia penonton senior dengan theme song televisi tahun 80-an.
Di balik keseruan itu, penonton akan diperkenalkan dengan No Name, smurf yang disuarakan James Corden. Ia bersahabat dengan Smurfette, smurf dengan rambut blonde, yang disuarakan Rihanna. Suatu saat, No Name sedang mencari nama yang cocok untuknya. Di desanya, setiap smurf setidaknya memiliki nama yang menggambarkan ciri khasnya. Misalnya Hefty Smurf yang kekar, Vanity Smurf yang selalu bangga, sampai Brainy Smurf yang pintar. Yang jadi masalah, hampir semua jenis telah terdaftar yang membuat No Name seperti tak punya pilihan.
Sampai suatu saat, dalam pencarian jati diri tersebut, ia mendapatkan sebuah kekuatan. Kekuatan tersebut adalah sihir, yang sama sekali tidak dimiliki para smurf. No Name dan Smurfette pun bersemangat untuk menginformasikan hal ini ke seisi desa. Di depan Papa Smurf, yang disuarakan John Goodman, No Name memamerkan kemampuannya. Masalah pun dimulai. Sihir yang dikeluarkannya malah membuat portal antardimensi yang menyebabkan Papa Smurf diculik oleh penyihir jahat bernama Gargamel, yang disuarakan JP Karliak. Di sinilah petualangan dimulai.
“Smurfs” disutradarai oleh Chris Miller, yang juga mengisi suara karakter Grouchy Smurf dan Camouflage Smurf di film ini. Sebelumnya, ia sempat mengisi suara Captain Ross dalam “The Boss Baby” ataupun menjadi Kowalski dalam franchise “Penguins of Madagascar.” Sebagai sutradara, ini merupakan animation feature ketiga setelah “Shrek the Third” dan “Puss in Boots.”
Ceritanya ditulis oleh Pam Brady, yang sudah dikenal sebagai penulis “South Park” dan “Team America: World Police.” Tak heran, jika film ini memang terasa punya serangkaian adegan slapstick yang menurut saya kurang mengena untuk penonton junior. Secara penyajian cerita, awalnya saya merasa “Smurfs” memberikan plot yang membingungkan, dan memang film ini akan menawarkan resolusi yang too good to be true. Pokoknya harus good ending dengan antagonis yang terasa bodoh.
Kekhawatiran saya awalnya dimulai ketika menyaksikan animasi ini yang seperti tak mau jelas arahnya. Di sisi lain, ia terasa hadir seperti animasi, kadang kartun, kadang seperti mau dicampur live action. Akan tetapi, setelah menyadari jika petualangan yang ditawarkan adalah antardimensi, di mana dimensi di sini diartikan sebagai format medium, sehingga tak heran penonton akan mendapati beragam versi animasi yang disajikan. Dari aspek ini, saya mendapati ada beragam inspirasi yang diambil, seperti menyertakan kartun gaya “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” permainan “Mario Bros.,” sampai Marvel “Guardian of the Galaxy.”
Dari sisi pemain, rasanya film ini cukup diwarnai dengan superstar. Ada Rihanna, James Corden, belum ditambah Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Kurt Russell, sampai Marshmello. Belum lagi ditambah dengan lagu-lagu yang menarik seperti “Higher Love” yang menyertakan budaya India dalam adegan menari para smurf. Rihanna pun juga menyertakan 3 track mulai dari hits ‘Don’t Stop the Music,’ ‘Anyone,’ dan ‘Friend of Mine.’
Alhasil, saya merasa “Smurfs” edisi kali ini memang dikemas hanya untuk menghibur. Menyaksikan karakter mungil ini saja sudah membuat saya merasa gemas, tanpa harus kecewa dengan plot cerita yang rasanya agak kurang. Termasuk dengan jokes yang malah membuat saya merasa datar. Setidaknya, lagu-lagu yang dihadirkan membuat saya teringat dengan pengalaman ketika menyaksikan animasi “Sing,” namun dengan versi cerita yang kurang jelas. Sebetulnya, saya cukup kecewa dan berharap jika dibuat sekuelnya bisa menawarkan petualangan yang seru dan tidak setengah matang seperti di film ini. Disappointed, but it’s cute.

For the umpteenth time, the Smurfs characters return to the big screen. Titled “Smurfs,” it’s now Paramount Animation’s turn to produce the film. If you recall, nearly a decade earlier, Sony Pictures Animation had already worked on three titles: “The Smurfs,” “The Smurfs 2,” and “Smurfs: The Lost Village.” So the question is, will this reboot version be as successful as the previous ones?
Starting its story, “Smurfs” immediately gets us excited while reintroducing us to Smurf Village, the hometown of the small blue fictional characters who live in mushroom-shaped houses. By presenting the cheerful ‘Smurfs Main Theme‘ aka ‘La La Song,’ it builds nostalgia for senior audiences with the 80s television theme song.
Behind the fun, audiences will be introduced to No Name, a smurf voiced by James Corden. He’s friends with Smurfette, a blonde-haired smurf voiced by Rihanna. At one point, No Name is searching for a suitable name for himself. In his village, every smurf at least has a name that describes their characteristic trait. For example, Hefty Smurf who is muscular, Vanity Smurf who is always proud, to Brainy Smurf who is smart. The problem is, almost all types have been registered, leaving No Name seemingly without options.
Until one day, in this search for identity, he gains a power. That power is magic, which no other smurf possesses. No Name and Smurfette are excited to inform the entire village. In front of Papa Smurf, voiced by John Goodman, No Name demonstrates his abilities. That’s when problems begin. The magic he releases instead creates an interdimensional portal that causes Papa Smurf to be kidnapped by an evil wizard named Gargamel, voiced by JP Karliak. This is where the adventure begins.
“Smurfs” is directed by Chris Miller, who also voices the characters Grouchy Smurf and Camouflage Smurf in this film. Previously, he voiced Captain Ross in “The Boss Baby” and played Kowalski in the “Penguins of Madagascar” franchise. As a director, this is his third animation feature after “Shrek the Third” and “Puss in Boots.”
The story is written by Pam Brady, known as a writer for “South Park” and “Team America: World Police.” No surprise, then, that this film feels like it has a series of slapstick scenes that, in my opinion, won’t resonate well with younger audiences. In terms of storytelling, initially I felt “Smurfs” delivered a confusing plot, and indeed this film offers a resolution that’s too good to be true. Basically, it has to be a good ending with an antagonist who feels stupid.
My concerns initially began when watching this animation that seemed directionless. On the other hand, it felt like animation, sometimes cartoon, sometimes like it wanted to mix in live action. However, after realizing that the adventure offered is interdimensional, where dimension here is interpreted as a medium format, it’s no wonder audiences will encounter various versions of animation presented. From this aspect, I found various inspirations taken, such as including “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” style cartoons, “Mario Bros.” games, to Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
In terms of cast, this film is quite colored by superstars. There’s Rihanna, James Corden, not to mention Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Kurt Russell, to Marshmello. Add to that interesting songs like “Higher Love” which incorporates Indian culture in the smurfs’ dancing scene. Rihanna also includes 3 tracks from hits ‘Don’t Stop the Music,’ ‘Anyone,’ and ‘Friend of Mine.’
As a result, I feel this edition of “Smurfs” is packaged purely for entertainment. Just watching these tiny characters makes me feel charmed, without having to be disappointed by a story plot that feels somewhat lacking. Including jokes that made me feel flat. At least, the songs presented reminded me of the experience of watching the “Sing” animation, but with a less clear story version. Actually, I’m quite disappointed and hope that if a sequel is made, it can offer an exciting adventure that isn’t half-baked like in this film. Disappointed, but it’s cute.
