🇮🇩 Bahasa Indonesia – Original

Rasanya memang agak random. Tapi judul filmnya terasa begitu familiar. Ternyata, “You Are the Apple of My Eye” merupakan sebuah remake film asal Taiwan di tahun 2011.

Hadir dalam versi Korea, “You Are the Apple of My Eye” sebelum ada versi filmnya, berasal dari sebuah novel semi-autobiografi berjudul “The Girl We Chased Together in Those Years” karangan Giddens Ko.

Dari segi cerita, apa yang ditawarkan “You Are the Apple of My Eye” terasa terlalu manis buat saya.

Sayangnya, secara keseluruhan “You Are the Apple of My Eye” hadir di bawah ekspektasi saya.

🇬🇧 English Version – Translated

One of the main reasons I added this film to my watchlist was when both lead actors suddenly appeared out of nowhere on the Indonesian Idol show. It felt quite random. But the film’s title felt so familiar. Turns out, “You Are the Apple of My Eye” is a remake of a Taiwanese film from 2011.

The film focuses on the character Koo Jin-Woo, played by Jung Jin-Young, who is still in high school. He is someone without burdens and without dreams. Day to day, he has a gang of guys consisting of Jeong-Hyuck who wants to be a lawyer, Yo-Han who loves to eat, Min-Goo who is always horny, and Byeong-Ju who is always asleep.

The love interest of this story is Oh Seon-Ah, played by Kim Da-Hyun, who is the class president who is not only beautiful, but also smart and ambitious. Seon-Ah appears as a school heartthrob who is actually a role model. Jin-Woo is attracted to Seon-Ah. The problem is they have opposing characteristics. Fortunately they are in the same class, until an event brings them closer together.

Coming in a Korean version, “You Are the Apple of My Eye” before its film version, originated from a semi-autobiographical novel titled “The Girl We Chased Together in Those Years” written by Giddens Ko. In this version, the film emphasizes the 2002 period, which was also the era of South Korean football pride, which then became the setting of the story. The film also slips in the K-Pop first wave era, presenting a gift with an image of Sung Yu-Ri, who at that time was a member of Fin.K.L. The film also includes the Typhoon Nabi disaster that occurred at the end of 2005.

Story-wise, what “You Are the Apple of My Eye” offers feels too sweet for me. The conflicts presented only feel like pebbles, without any major problems that are significant. The story of Jin-Woo and Seon-Ah flows very smoothly, and feels like a feel good movie. Sure, there will be surprises presented, but the conclusion this film delivers feels so rushed without understanding what process occurred.

From the acting side, I feel the chemistry between the two leads, Jin-Young and Da-Hyun, is presented quite well. I knew them both previously as members of B1A4 and Twice. Unexpectedly, Da-Hyun transformed remarkably charmingly in this film. When remembering when she competed in Sixteen, which made her debut with Twice, it feels very far from her visual presence which is much more mature.

Set in a school love story, this film certainly feels like it brings some people to nostalgia. Especially with various activities that feel relatable: acts of solidarity against teachers, national exam preparation, starting to try adult things like drinking alcohol, field trips before graduation, to the difficulty of entering the desired university. All of this will be fillers behind the love story of Seon-Ah and Jin-Woo who never officially date. Likewise when they both enter the university world, which changes their perspective when they become participants in it, which is mostly described as filled with drinking activities.

Unfortunately, overall “You Are the Apple of My Eye” came below my expectations. Understandably, I also haven’t watched the Taiwanese film. This series of stories lacking conflict appears more as a collection of depictions of first love yearnings. Moreover, Da-Hyun’s visuals which are very eye-catching will indeed distract from the story which is just so-so.

When comparing stories with a first love theme, I might recommend “A Little Thing Called Love” from Thailand more, which sells story rather than visuals. But I think K-Lovers definitely won’t want to miss their idols. Right?
