Tontonan ini terbilang sebagai salah satu yang saya nantikan di penghujung tahun. A24 yang beberapa tahun terakhir cukup mendapat spotlight akan film-filmnya, ditambah Luca Guadagnino yang sebelumnya lumayan berhasil dengan “Call Me By Your Name,” menjadi beberapa faktor pendorong saya untuk menyaksikan film ini. Berjudul “Queer,” penonton akan diajak ke dalam adaptasi novella seorang penulis beat generation kenamaan asal Amerika Serikat, William S. Burroughs.

Cerita film ini diangkat dengan latar di kota Mexico City pada era 50-an. Tokoh utama karakter ini adalah William Lee, diperankan oleh Daniel Craig. Pada pembukaannya, Lee seakan ingin mengeksplorasi status queer-nya, yang membuatnya menargetkan pria lebih muda, melakukan pendekatan, sampai berniat untuk berlanjut ke ranjang. Akan tetapi, tidak cukup mudah untuk memenuhi nafsu dan niat eksplorasinya ini.

Nongkrong di kafe ternyata menjadi caranya dalam menjalankan misinya. Sampai suatu ketika, saat ia sedang menyaksikan sekelompok orang yang sedang melakukan sabung ayam, ia bertemu tatap dengan pria muda berambut klimis. Ia diketahui kemudian bernama Eugene Allerton, diperankan oleh Drew Starkey, yang merupakan seorang American GI soldier. Singkat cerita, ketika Lee dan Allerton berada dalam frekuensi yang sama, kedekatan keduanya pun lebih dari sekadar teman.

Berbekal rasa penuh ekspektasi tinggi, “Queer” ternyata tidak semegah yang saya bayangkan. Film yang disutradarai Luca Guadagnino ini terasa berhasil menjadi suatu tontonan berkonsep, namun tak mampu memikat penonton. Seperti pada awal kisahnya, cerita terasa bergerak terlalu cepat, dengan begitu lambat menjelaskan cara Lee untuk memikat Allerton, namun tak menjelaskan bagaimana keduanya bisa masuk dalam frekuensi yang sama.

Sebagai suatu adaptasi, saya seperti mendapatkan pengalaman yang sama ketika menyaksikan adaptasi “Naked Lunch,” karya Burroughs lainnya yang diadaptasi menjadi film oleh David Cronenberg di tahun 1991. Salah satu simbolisasinya adalah kehadiran centipede ataupun penggambaran surrealisme yang sering disertakan sebagai bagian ciri khas ceritanya. Bagian yang cukup menarik disimak seperti saat Lee yang sedang menyaksikan miniatur, kemudian matanya menatap apa yang terjadi di dalamnya.

Perlu diketahui, William Lee sendiri adalah sebutan lain bagi Burroughs. Kala itu, Burroughs tengah dalam kasusnya, yang katanya tidak sengaja membunuh sang istri, Joan Volmer. Di kesendiriannya ini, ia menjalin persahabatan dengan Adelbert Lewis Marker, yang kemudian menjadi inspirasinya dalam menulis novel dengan tema homoseksual yang cukup kental. Pada kenyataannya, Burroughs tak berhasil bersama Marker. Ia menjelaskan maksud queer dalam ceritanya jika love interest-nya sebetulnya tak punya niat bersama Burroughs, namun punya ketertarikan untuk mengeksplorasi secara seksual.

Secara penyajian, film yang dirilis di Venice Film Festival ini terasa digarap dengan lumayan ambisius. Guadagnino tetap konsisten dalam menghadirkan sajian adegan dengan estetika yang menarik, sekaligus kemampuannya dalam membangun kesan sensual yang memang tidak se-erotis adegan buah dalam “Call Me By Your Name.” Sayangnya, seiring berjalannya cerita “Queer” seperti terjebak ke dalam tontonan yang seperti tidak tahu mau ke mana.

Pada bagian awal, penonton akan diberi kesan dalam memahami sang karakter utama, termasuk upaya kerasnya untuk merebut hati Allerton. Setelah berhasil dicoba, cerita malah masuk ke dalam pusaran keinginan Lee untuk bisa menguasai Allerton dengan ajakan berpetualang ke Amerika Selatan. Pada bagian akhir, penonton malah disajikan cerita campuran petualangan sekaligus banyak keabsurdan, yang sayangnya malah terasa layaknya suatu sketsa komedi “Indiana Jones.”

Dari segi akting, saya memuji upaya Daniel Craig dalam film ini. Ini merupakan salah satu penampilan terbaik di sepanjang kariernya, selain dikenal lebih dulu dalam “No Time to Die” sebagai James Bond. Ia keluar dari zona nyaman dan menjelma sebagai pria paruh baya yang sedang puber kedua. Puber ini yang membangun keinginan karakter Lee untuk menguasai Allerton dengan teori telepati dan obat dari tanaman Yage-nya.

Dari sisi love interest, Drew Starkey, aktor yang sebelumnya dikenal dengan “Love, Simon,” tahu betul dalam memanfaatkan adegan-adegannya. Ia mampu hadir dengan memikat, terutama saat menebar pesonanya pada Lee di awal film, yang saya rasa juga mungkin akan menyambar kursi penonton. Chemistry yang dihadirkan keduanya juga terbilang menarik. Saya takjub dengan upaya Luca Guadagnino yang kerap memasangkan dua aktor yang terbilang straight dan menyulap mereka, sehingga tak ada rasa feminin yang hadir. Ini tampak terlihat jika kita menyaksikan “Call Me By Your Name,” ataupun film Ang Lee “Brokeback Mountain.”

Selain itu, ada karakter yang cukup membuat saya terkejut. Ia adalah Lesley Manville, aktris veteran yang telah dikenal dalam “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” “Back to Black,” maupun “Maleficent.” Di sini, ia hadir sebagai Doctor Cotter, yang merupakan peneliti asal Amerika yang hidup di tengah hutan dalam pedalaman hutan hujan Ecuador. Perawakan yang amat berbeda, dengan karakter yang selalu mengejutkan dengan gaya yang kerap menodongkan senjata, membuatnya lumayan mencuri perhatian di film ini.

Queer” dihadirkan sebagai tayangan dengan durasi dua jam lebih, dan jujur, film ini terasa begitu panjang. Buruknya, komposisi penceritaannya terasa kurang seimbang. Di saat penonton akan penasaran bagaimana Allerton berhasil tertambat Lee sama sekali tidak diceritakan dan terasa begitu cepat. Pada bagian yang tak penting, misalnya saat Lee termenung akibat efek obat malah dibawakan dengan begitu lama. Potensi yang seharusnya dieksplorasi film ini malah kurang diunggulkan, sehingga saya cukup mengabaikan banyak detail yang ternyata menjadi kurang terlalu berguna di dalam penceritaannya.

Alhasil, “Queer” memang jauh di bawah ekspektasi saya. Walaupun dikemas dengan begitu berkonsep, film ini kurang memikat selayaknya Allerton. Cerita yang kurang menarik, ditambah absurditas dan nuansa surrealisme yang rasanya cukup setengah hati dihadirkan. Tanpa Craig, rasanya “Queer” dapat begitu mudah terlupakan.

This film was one of those I eagerly anticipated at the end of the year. A24, which has gained considerable spotlight for its films in recent years, combined with Luca Guadagnino’s previous success with “Call Me By Your Name,” became driving factors for me to watch this film. Titled “Queer,” audiences are invited into an adaptation of a novella by renowned American beat generation writer William S. Burroughs.

The film’s story is set in Mexico City during the 1950s. The main character is William Lee, played by Daniel Craig. In its opening, Lee seems to want to explore his queer status, which leads him to target younger men, approach them, and intend to take things to bed. However, it’s not easy enough to fulfill his lust and exploratory intentions.

Hanging out at cafes turns out to be his way of carrying out his mission. Until one day, while watching a group of people engaged in cockfighting, he makes eye contact with a young man with slicked hair. He is later known as Eugene Allerton, played by Drew Starkey, who is an American GI soldier. Long story short, when Lee and Allerton are on the same frequency, their closeness becomes more than just friendship.

Armed with high expectations, “Queer” turned out not to be as magnificent as I imagined. This film directed by Luca Guadagnino feels like it successfully became a conceptual viewing experience, but fails to captivate audiences. Like in the beginning of its story, the narrative feels like it moves too quickly, taking so long to explain Lee’s way of attracting Allerton, but not explaining how both could get on the same frequency.

As an adaptation, I felt like I had the same experience when watching the adaptation of “Naked Lunch,” another Burroughs work adapted into film by David Cronenberg in 1991. One of its symbolisms is the presence of centipedes or surrealistic depictions often included as part of his storytelling characteristics. An interesting part to observe is when Lee is watching a miniature, then his eyes gaze at what’s happening inside it.

It should be noted that William Lee himself is another name for Burroughs. At that time, Burroughs was in his case, allegedly accidentally killing his wife, Joan Volmer. In this solitude, he formed a friendship with Adelbert Lewis Marker, who later became his inspiration in writing a novel with quite strong homosexual themes. In reality, Burroughs was unsuccessful with Marker. He explained the meaning of queer in his story if his love interest actually had no intention of being with Burroughs, but had an interest in sexual exploration.

In terms of presentation, this film released at the Venice Film Festival feels quite ambitiously crafted. Guadagnino remains consistent in presenting scenes with attractive aesthetics, as well as his ability to build sensual impressions that are indeed not as erotic as the fruit scene in “Call Me By Your Name.” Unfortunately, as the story of “Queer” progresses, it seems trapped in a viewing experience that doesn’t know where it’s going.

In the early part, audiences will be given an impression of understanding the main character, including his hard efforts to win Allerton’s heart. After successfully trying, the story instead enters into a whirlpool of Lee’s desire to be able to control Allerton with an invitation to adventure to South America. In the final part, audiences are instead presented with a mixed story of adventure and much absurdity, which unfortunately feels like an “Indiana Jones” comedy sketch.

In terms of acting, I praise Daniel Craig’s efforts in this film. This is one of his best performances throughout his career, besides being known earlier in “No Time to Die” as James Bond. He steps out of his comfort zone and transforms into a middle-aged man going through a second puberty. This puberty builds the character Lee’s desire to control Allerton with telepathy theory and drugs from the Yage plant.

From the love interest side, Drew Starkey, an actor previously known for “Love, Simon,” knows exactly how to utilize his scenes. He manages to appear captivating, especially when spreading his charm on Lee at the beginning of the film, which I think might also strike the audience seats. The chemistry presented by both is also quite interesting. I’m amazed by Luca Guadagnino’s efforts who often pairs two actors who are considered straight and transforms them, so there’s no feminine feeling present. This is visible if we watch “Call Me By Your Name,” or Ang Lee’s film “Brokeback Mountain.”

Additionally, there’s a character that quite surprised me. She is Lesley Manville, a veteran actress known in “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris,” “Back to Black,” and “Maleficent.” Here, she appears as Doctor Cotter, who is an American researcher living in the middle of the forest in the depths of Ecuador’s rainforest. Her very different appearance, with a character that always surprises with a style that often points guns, makes her quite steal attention in this film.

“Queer” is presented as a viewing with a duration of more than two hours, and honestly, this film feels so long. Unfortunately, its storytelling composition feels unbalanced. When audiences would be curious about how Allerton successfully anchored Lee is not told at all and feels so fast. In unimportant parts, for example when Lee contemplates due to drug effects, it’s brought on for so long. The potential that this film should have explored is instead less highlighted, so I quite ignored many details that turned out to be less useful in its storytelling.

As a result, “Queer” is indeed far below my expectations. Although packaged so conceptually, this film is less captivating like Allerton. An uninteresting story, plus absurdity and surrealistic nuances that feel quite half-hearted. Without Craig, “Queer” could easily be forgotten.
