DreamWorks Animation kembali membawa film ini ke layar emas. Berbekal judul “Trolls Band Together,” penonton akan dibawa dalam cerita petualangan Branch mengenai masa lalunya yang ternyata pernah menjadi anggota boyband cilik. Apakah film ini seseru pendahulunya?
Film diawali dengan memperkenalkan penonton pada sebuah boyband yang terdiri dari makhluk imut lucu menggemaskan. Mereka ternyata kakak beradik, dan dipimpin oleh si sulung, John Dory, yang disuarakan oleh Eric André. Sisanya ada Spruce, Clay, Floyd dan Baby Branch. Oh ya, nama boyband ini adalah BroZone, yang saya rasa agak mirip dengan Boyzone, boyband yang digawangi Ronan Keating pada akhir 90-an.
Awal cerita memperlihatkan bagaimana Baby Branch, yang disuarakan Justin Timberlake, amat tegang untuk tampil di depan panggung. Ia masih amat lucu, menggunakan kacamata sekaligus pampers yang rasanya kata ‘baby‘ amat pantas menggambarkan si kecil ini. Hubungannya sendiri, Baby Branch amat dekat dengan Floyd, yang disuarakan oleh Troye Sivan, yang selalu menjadi tempat ia berkeluh kesah.
Sayang, di awal aksi penampilan mereka yang sudah dibuka dengan cukup berwarna, harus gagal saat kelimanya gagal menciptakan harmonisasi. Prestasi yang berubah jadi tragedi. BroZone kemudian bubar dengan perseteruan mereka yang tidak mau Dory terlalu mendominasi. BroZone pun menjadi kenangan.
Cerita lalu membawa penonton ke masa kini, ketika Branch sekarang sudah memiliki kekasih, Poppy, yang disuarakan oleh Anna Kendrick. Keduanya hendak mendatangi perkawinan sahabat Poppy bernama Bridget, yang disuarakan oleh Zooey Deschanel, yang merupakan Bergen, makhluk monster berbadan besar. Di tengah acara tersebut, tiba-tiba Dory muncul dan mengacaukan situasi.
Dory menceritakan bahwa ia ingin menyelamatkan Floyd, yang diculik oleh duo artis bernama Velvet dan Veneer, yang disuarakan Amy Schumer dan Andrew Rannells. Situasi tersebut sekaligus membuka identitas masa lalu Branch pada Poppy, sekaligus membawa keduanya menuju petualangan penyelamatan Floyd. Tak ketinggalan, Tiny Diamond, yang disuarakan Kenan Thompson, ikut serta dalam menyatukan kembali BroZone.
Pada edisi ketiganya, “Trolls Band Together” masih disutradarai Walt Dohrn, dan kini ditemani Tim Heitz. Ceritanya kali ini ditulis oleh Elizabeth Tippet, yang juga menulis “Trolls World Tour.” Secara penyajian, film ini masih menggunakan formula yang sama dalam menghibur penontonnya: komponen musikal yang diambil dari lagu-lagu hits dengan animasi yang amat memanjakan mata.
Bila membahas ceritanya, film dengan durasi 91 menit ini sudah menjelaskan apa yang akan dicapai film ini pada ending-nya. Apalagi dengan target penonton yang terbilang segala usia, tentu ekspektasi happy ending harus tetap diunggulkan. Begitu pula dengan ekspektasi yang saya bangun saat menyaksikan film ini. Yang membuat saya tetap menikmati film ini, ya karena penasaran dengan plot cerita, terutama dalam mengungkap masa lalu dan nostalgia personil BroZone.
Dari ensemble cast-nya, rasanya “Trolls Band Together” dipenuhi oleh banyak bintang. Mulai dari Justin Timberlake dan Anna Kendrick yang masih mengisi posisi karakter utama. Lalu diramaikan Anderson .Paak, Troye Sivan, Amy Schumer, RuPaul, Zooey Deschanel, sampai Camila Cabello.
Kalau bicara lagu-lagu yang dihadirkan “Trolls Band Together” tetap menghadirkan beberapa lagu-lagu hits yang kadang dibawakan dengan mencampurkannya jadi satu nyanyian. Misalnya saat lagu “Keep It Comin’ Love” yang digabung dengan hits “We Are Family,” “Good as Hell” dari Lizzo sampai “Hello“-nya Lionel Richie. Belum lagi dengan lagu-lagu 70-an seperti “Stayin’ Alive” dari Bee Gees dan “I Want You Back“-nya Jackson 5 digabung. Tidak sampai di situ, Justin Timberlake juga menulis beberapa lagu untuk film ini, beberapa di antaranya adalah “Family,” “Perfect” dan “It Takes Two.”
Untuk ukuran sebuah tontonan, “Trolls Band Together” terasa begitu menghibur. Film yang sudah cukup lama hadir di watchlist saya ini, setidaknya memberikan hiburan bagi segala usia yang tidak membosankan. Mau ditonton berulang kali pun rasanya tidak membosankan. Saya yakin di saat Hollywood yang kini banyak mengunggulkan sekuel, rasanya ‘Trolls‘ sebagai franchise tetap akan dilanjutkan sebagai moneymaker yang masih mampu menghibur. Nice!

DreamWorks Animation brings this film back to the big screen. With the title “Trolls Band Together,” audiences will be taken on Branch’s adventure story about his past when he was apparently a member of a children’s boyband. Is this film as entertaining as its predecessors?
The film begins by introducing audiences to a boyband consisting of cute, adorable creatures. They turn out to be siblings, led by the eldest, John Dory, voiced by Eric André. The rest include Spruce, Clay, Floyd, and Baby Branch. Oh yes, this boyband’s name is BroZone, which I think is quite similar to Boyzone, the boyband led by Ronan Keating in the late 90s.
The opening story shows how Baby Branch, voiced by Justin Timberlake, is very nervous about performing on stage. He’s still very cute, wearing glasses and diapers, making the word “baby” very fitting to describe this little one. As for his relationship, Baby Branch is very close to Floyd, voiced by Troye Sivan, who always becomes his confidant.
Unfortunately, at the beginning of their performance that had opened quite colorfully, it had to fail when all five failed to create harmonization. An achievement that turned into tragedy. BroZone then disbanded due to their dispute over not wanting Dory to be too dominant. BroZone became just a memory.
The story then brings audiences to the present, when Branch now has a girlfriend, Poppy, voiced by Anna Kendrick. They are about to attend the wedding of Poppy’s friend named Bridget, voiced by Zooey Deschanel, who is a Bergen, a large-bodied monster creature. In the middle of the event, Dory suddenly appears and disrupts the situation.
Dory tells them that he wants to save Floyd, who has been kidnapped by a duo of artists named Velvet and Veneer, voiced by Amy Schumer and Andrew Rannells. This situation simultaneously reveals Branch’s past identity to Poppy, while bringing them both on a rescue adventure for Floyd. Not to be left behind, Tiny Diamond, voiced by Kenan Thompson, joins in reuniting BroZone.
In its third edition, “Trolls Band Together” is still directed by Walt Dohrn, now accompanied by Tim Heitz. This time the story is written by Elizabeth Tippet, who also wrote “Trolls World Tour.” In terms of presentation, this film still uses the same formula to entertain its audience: musical components taken from hit songs with animation that is very pleasing to the eye.
When discussing the story, this 91-minute film has already explained what this film will achieve in its ending. Especially with a target audience of all ages, the expectation of a happy ending must still be prioritized. Likewise with the expectations I built while watching this film. What made me still enjoy this film was my curiosity about the plot, especially in revealing the past and nostalgia of BroZone members.
From its ensemble cast, “Trolls Band Together” seems to be filled with many stars. Starting from Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick who still fill the main character positions. Then enlivened by Anderson .Paak, Troye Sivan, Amy Schumer, RuPaul, Zooey Deschanel, to Camila Cabello.
When talking about the songs presented in “Trolls Band Together,” it still presents several hit songs that are sometimes performed by mixing them into one song. For example, when the song “Keep It Comin’ Love” is combined with hits “We Are Family,” “Good as Hell” by Lizzo to Lionel Richie’s “Hello.” Not to mention 70s songs like “Stayin’ Alive” by Bee Gees and Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” combined. Not stopping there, Justin Timberlake also wrote several songs for this film, some of which are “Family,” “Perfect” and “It Takes Two.”
For the measure of entertainment, “Trolls Band Together” feels so entertaining. This film, which has been on my watchlist for quite a while, at least provides entertainment for all ages that is not boring. Even watching it repeatedly doesn’t feel boring. I’m sure that at a time when Hollywood is now heavily favoring sequels, ‘Trolls‘ as a franchise will continue to be continued as a moneymaker that is still able to entertain. Nice!
