How to Train Your Dragon.”

Sinematografer Bill Pope, yang sebelumnya dikenal dalam The Boys in the Band ataupun Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” amat memukau ketika masuk ke dalam scene terbang, yang rasanya akan amat worthed jika saya saksikan di layar IMAX.

A lively, meaningful adaptation that truly exceeded my expectations!

🇬🇧 English Version – Translated

After always postponing watching the first animated film, I finally watched the live action version. As one of the contenders for this year’s award season from Universal Pictures, “How to Train Your Dragon” finally became my choice for weekend viewing.

The film opens with the main character’s narration introducing the main setting of this film, namely the village of Berk. This village is a Viking village, and not just any ordinary village. Frequently attacked by dragons, this village always fights back, even though they must accept their homes being burned by hot fire blasts. Led by Stoick the Vast, played by Gerard Butler, the community doesn’t give up in finding the dragons’ lair.

The main character is named Hiccup, played by Mason Thames, and is actually the son of the tribal chief. While other young people intend to become dragon slayers, he, who feels he doesn’t have sufficient physique, decides to only make mechanical tools to fight dragons. Until one day, everything changes when he meets a black dragon that is paralyzed at a waterfall.

Hiccup’s meeting with this dragon feels interesting. He releases his weapon, as if wanting to sincerely interact with this black dragon. This black dragon, who is then named Toothless, doesn’t easily act friendly. But with Hiccup’s sincerity, he becomes curious to create a tail wing for Toothless’s broken one. From here, Hiccup and Toothless’s adventure begins.

This film is directed and written by Dean DeBlois, the figure who also wrote Lilo & Stitch or both animated versions of “How to Train Your Dragon.” Actually this story is adapted from a book of the same title by Cressida Cowell. It feels like, after seeing Disney frequently making live action versions of their animation collection, DreamWorks Animation seems to be copying the same thing. Since it’s directed by DeBlois himself, who also packaged the story in film media, the expected visualization should be as similar as before.

Story-wise, “How to Train Your Dragon” has a plot that’s interesting to me and feels like meaningful viewing for its target audience. This film tells the story of someone who feels they have shortcomings, but eventually finds their unexpected skill. By the way, this is similar to the “Smurfs” animation, except this one’s presentation is more proper.

Armed with a 125-minute duration, “How to Train Your Dragon” comes at just the right length, not too long or too short, to offer its action-packed story. Throughout watching it, somehow my mood meter became very enthusiastic, especially during Hiccup and Toothless’s first meeting. From then on, the adventure story presented kept me glued until the end of the story.

The good character development is also well performed by actor Mason Thames. Likewise when the film introduces the main character’s love interest to Astrid, played by Nico Parker. This film for all ages doesn’t position itself too much in a love story setting, which is a plus point. Instead, this film delves deeper into the dynamic relationship between Hiccup and his father, which is also the main point of this film’s story.

From a technical side, I really liked this film’s cinematography. Cinematographer Bill Pope, who was previously known in The Boys in the Band or Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is stunning when entering the flying scenes, which I feel would be very worthed if I watched it on an IMAX screen. Likewise during the moment when Stoick the Vast kneels before Toothless, which on one side feels like a magnificent war, but wrapped in complete darkness.

Another element that also entertained me is the music which is again composed by John Powell, who previously received a Best Original Score nomination from its animated predecessor. With the Viking setting, Powell again presents tracks that are stirring from the start. For example the track ‘This Is Real Berk’ which has a fast theme with thick medieval song nuances, or ‘Meeting the Queen’ which is very tense. I feel the “How to Train Your Dragon” score album this time easily enters my shortlist for Best Original Score this year.

When comparing adaptations into live action like Lilo & Stitch,” “How to Train Your Dragon” looks more like a complete package. If that Disney-made film made me more nostalgic and smile seeing the cute Stitch, this one made me see it as viewing that I didn’t expect would be that entertaining. A lively, meaningful adaptation that truly exceeded my expectations!
