Apalagi ketika originalitas cerita film ini diunggulkan dalam kategori best original screenplay, yang semakin memicu rasa penasaran dengan ceritanya. “My Old Ass” hadir sebagai tontonan coming-of-age akan seksualitas dan masa depan, yang dibalut kisah kehangatan akan keluarga dan cinta.
Sosok sentral “My Old Ass” adalah Elliott, diperankan oleh Maisy Stella. Baru saja menapaki usia 18 tahun, di hari ulang tahunnya, ia malah mengabaikan keluarganya yang tengah menunggu untuk memberikannya kejutan. Ia malah pergi dengan dua orang sahabatnya, Ruthie dan Ro, yang diperankan oleh Maddie Ziegler dan Kerrice Brooks. Seperti baru lepas dari kandang, begitu umpamaan saya pada Elliott, ia seakan penuh semangat untuk mengeksplorasi dunia dewasa yang begitu rumit.

Hal inilah yang membuat ceritanya tidak terasa terlalu serius, namun mungkin akan menyentil dari pesan yang disampaikan.
Film yang berdurasi 89 menit ini terbilang cukup menipu saya. Semua berkat upaya penceritaan yang seakan-akan membangun kesan antagonis pada karakter love interest bernama Chad, diperankan oleh Percy Hynes White, berkat peringatan yang diberikan Elliott senior di film ini. Alhasil, ini malah membuktikan bagi yang tertipu bahwa kita terlalu banyak overthinking dan memakan begitu banyak asumsi.
Salah satu eksplorasi menarik dalam “My Old Ass” adalah kisah coming-of-age Elliott yang sebetulnya sudah cukup bangga dengan status orientasi seksualnya sebagai lesbian. Ia seakan melabeli dirinya untuk menyukai perempuan, sekaligus mengarungi petualangan bercinta, selayaknya kehidupan bebas para remaja di sana. Hal menarik muncul saat Elliott tiba-tiba menyukai Chad, berkat serangkaian pertemuan mereka, dan menguji kembali label yang sudah dipakainya.
Selain itu, topik keluarga juga jadi bagian yang mengena. Ketika seseorang lepas dari kandang, ia mungkin akan bebas untuk mencari situasi yang baru dan cocok baginya, dan kadang melupakan yang bersama-sama dengannya. “My Old Ass” seperti memberi peringatan bagi target penontonnya untuk bisa memaknai waktu dan situasi yang mereka miliki selama orang-orang yang mereka sayangi masih ada. So sweet!
Membahas penampilannya, terbilang sebagai debut memerankan karakter utama, aktris Maisy Stella, menunjukkan potensinya sebagai the next big thing. Saya menyukai bagaimana karakter Elliott dihadirkan, termasuk proses refleksi yang ia jalani di sepanjang cerita. Kehadiran Aubrey Plaza, aktris yang juga tampil dalam “Ingrid Goes West” ini, juga perlu di-highlight sebagai pendukung dalam ceritanya. Plaza hanya tampil sebentar, namun ia berhasil menguasai cerita di setiap adegan kemunculannya.
Ada salah satu bagian yang cukup tak terduga di film ini, yaitu ketika adegan Elliott masuk ke dalam dunia halusinasinya. Ia menjelma layaknya Justin Bieber dan kemudian menyanyikan “One Less Lonely Girl” sambil membayangkan Chad sebagai the lonely girl. Ditambah, Chad yang punya perawakan berambut sebahu dikemas layaknya perempuan, namun tetap hadir dengan maskulin.
“My Old Ass” menutup ceritanya dengan hal yang tak terduga dan cukup hangat. Film ini patut jadi another feel good movie recommendation. Ceritanya ringan dan seperti diselimuti ambisi karakter-karakter muda yang seakan siap menatap kehidupan nyata, sekaligus konflik personal yang mungkin akan relatable buat mereka yang akan semakin dewasa. Walaupun tak bisa lepas dari nuansa teen comedy, selipan time travel yang hadir justru malah membangun ketertarikan yang membuatnya terasa begitu seru. Love it!

Especially when the originality of this film’s story is highlighted in the best original screenplay category, which further sparks curiosity about its story. “My Old Ass” presents itself as a coming-of-age viewing experience about sexuality and the future, wrapped in a warm story about family and love.
The central figure of “My Old Ass” is Elliott, played by Maisy Stella. Having just turned 18, on her birthday, she instead ignores her family who are waiting to give her a surprise. She goes off with her two best friends, Ruthie and Ro, played by Maddie Ziegler and Kerrice Brooks. Like someone who has just left the nest, that’s my analogy for Elliott, she seems full of enthusiasm to explore the complex adult world.
These three girls spending the night in the forest then try something. Ro brings mushrooms, and sure enough, all three try this forbidden plant. When seeing her two friends start hallucinating, Elliott is confused about why she doesn’t feel the effects. Suddenly, a woman appears. She claims to be Elliott, played by Aubrey Plaza, from her future. What a surprise!
I don’t want to continue the story. The premise is enough up to this point. Up to the point where I become increasingly focused on a series of curious question marks about the story. The story itself is written and directed by Megan Park. “My Old Ass” was released at the Sundance Film Festival 2024, and comes packaged as a coming-of-age story shrouded in comedic nuance. This is what makes the story not feel too serious, but might touch on the message being conveyed.
This 89-minute film is quite deceptive to me. All thanks to storytelling efforts that seem to build an antagonistic impression of the love interest character named Chad, played by Percy Hynes White, thanks to warnings given by senior Elliott in this film. As a result, this proves to those who are deceived that we overthink too much and consume too many assumptions.
One interesting exploration in “My Old Ass” is Elliott’s coming-of-age story, who is actually quite proud of her sexual orientation status as a lesbian. She seems to label herself as liking women, while navigating romantic adventures, like the free life of teenagers there. An interesting thing emerges when Elliott suddenly likes Chad, thanks to a series of their meetings, and tests again the label she has been wearing.
Besides that, the family topic also becomes a touching part. When someone leaves the nest, they might be free to look for new situations that suit them, and sometimes forget those who are with them. “My Old Ass” seems to give a warning to its target audience to be able to appreciate the time and situations they have while the people they love are still there. So sweet!
Discussing her performance, considered a debut playing the main character, actress Maisy Stella shows her potential as the next big thing. I like how Elliott’s character is presented, including the reflection process she goes through throughout the story. The presence of Aubrey Plaza, an actress who also appeared in “Ingrid Goes West“, also needs to be highlighted as a supporter in the story. Plaza only appears briefly, but she manages to dominate the story in every scene of her appearance.
There’s one quite unexpected part in this film, which is when Elliott enters her hallucinatory world. She transforms like Justin Bieber and then sings “One Less Lonely Girl” while imagining Chad as the lonely girl. Additionally, Chad who has shoulder-length hair is packaged like a woman, but still appears masculine.
“My Old Ass” closes its story with something unexpected and quite warm. This film deserves to be another feel good movie recommendation. The story is light and seems shrouded in the ambitions of young characters who seem ready to face real life, as well as personal conflicts that might be relatable for those who are growing up. Although it can’t escape the teen comedy nuance, the time travel element that appears actually builds interest that makes it feel so exciting. Love it!
